Position Description The Scleroderma, Vasculitis & Myositis Center (SVM) at the Hospital for Special Surgery is seeking a student to work as a clinical research assistant, focusing on studies related to scleroderma, vasculitis, and myositis. The student will be trained in Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols, HIPAA, and human subject research, and will have the opportunity to participate in clinical case conferences and attend weekly seminars.
Responsibilities include:
Identifying eligible patients, administering enrollment questionnaires, gathering a complete medical history, processing blood samples, and entering data into an electronic database
Identifying eligible patients for clinical trials, coordinating patient visits, and acting as a liaison between patients and physicians
Assessing the safety and efficacy of investigational therapies in clinical trials
Devising workable strategies to boost enrollment for clinical trials and observational studies, including finding and/or developing innovative and effective advertisement tools
Assisting with the writing of study protocols and grant applications to funding agencies including the National Institute of Health
Interacting directly with nurses and physicians to monitor the patients’ treatment
Process blood samples in the lab, which involves basic laboratory tasks such as centrifuging, pipetting and aliquoting
Opportunity to assist with the development of patient education and outreach programs
Position Requirements
Bachelor's degree
Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Relevant experience in clinical settings and desire to matriculate to medical school preferred
Must be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Strong organizational skills, writing skills, and attention to detail
