Should I Retake the MCAT?
Many students ask themselves whether or not they should retake the MCAT. There is no straight forward answer! Every student’s situation is different and depending on the circumstances one can decide whether or not to retake the MCAT. There are several factors one must take into consideration prior to their decision. First and foremost, ask yourself “can you have done do done better?” Deliberate and organize your thoughts: Do I feel that my score accurately reflects my ability? Did I feel that I did not have enough time to devote to MCAT study because of work in my academic classes? At the same time one must consider the risks of not improving their score in one or more sections. Reflect on the risks of retaking the MCAT as well. Do I have the energy and mental ability to prepare for the MCAT again? Furthermore, think about your score. Was your score above or below the national average? Look into the schools that you will be applying to and see what their acceptable average is for each section. Lastly, Consider your overall GPA and other aspects of your application that can help you compete. A high and competitive GPA can help your application. Med schools also look at your BCPM (science and math). If you have a low BCMP and low MCAT score than perhaps it’s in your favor to retake the MCAT.
